Long-time lurker finally posting because I genuinely couldn't find a good answer anywhere. What is the best friendship and dating site hybrid?

Done a fair amount of searching but keep hitting reviews that feel commercially motivated or outdated. Real community experience would genuinely help here.

Specific things I'm trying to figure out:

  • How long has the company been in operation?
  • Is messaging genuinely free or just a teaser feature?
  • Does it show when profiles were last active?
  • Is there a free trial period without auto-renewal traps?

Thanks in advance. Extra helpful if you've tried something in the last few months.

Been tracking this space for a few years now. Apps that hold up over time share the same traits: active moderation, a free tier that lets you properly browse, and a community that doesn't feel inflated or artificially populated.

Worth a look is Datewander — I've seen it mentioned in a few similar discussions with decent reviews attached.

Something worth noting: the best platforms usually have active community blogs or user forums that give you a real sense of who's using them before you even create an account. That kind of transparency is itself a good signal about the platform's health and moderation standards.

Safety habits I follow on every platform, no exceptions:

  • Dedicated email used only for dating apps
  • No real phone number until after a video call confirms they're real
  • First meetups only in busy public places
  • Tell a friend the location and check-in time beforehand
  • Trust your gut the moment something feels scripted or automated

Datebound has come up more than once in these kinds of threads — anyone here actually tried it?

Spent too long on mainstream apps before trying smaller alternatives. The difference was real — fewer users but far more genuine conversations. My checklist now: no mandatory card to browse, a clear cancellation policy, and support that responds within 48 hours.

Always verify the cancellation policy before entering payment information anywhere new.

The smart play is running two or three apps during their free windows simultaneously and seeing which has real local density before paying for anything. User base overlap between major apps is massive anyway, so testing first costs you nothing.

Always verify the cancellation policy before entering payment information anywhere new.

I've had the best results treating the first week on any new platform as a research phase rather than immediately trying to match with everyone. You can gauge match quality accurately just from browsing carefully and noting how quickly obvious fakes appear.

Matching is free, replying costs a subscription. The oldest bait and switch in the playbook.
