Kept finding conflicting information online so figured the community here would give it straight. What are the most reputable dating sites for someone who has never dated online?

A lot of advice out there on this topic is clearly written by someone who has never used these apps. Looking for genuinely firsthand input from real users.

Specific things I'm trying to figure out:

  • Does it actually work without a credit card at all?
  • Does it have a stable mobile app?
  • Can you hide your profile from specific people?
  • Can I browse profiles without creating an account?
  • Are spam filters actually enforced?

Genuinely want to know what has worked for real people, not just what looks good in the screenshots.

Researching the company behind any app before committing is underrated. A quick search can save a lot of grief:

  • Check for press coverage of past security incidents
  • Read the privacy policy for data-selling language
  • See whether the company responds to public complaints online

One platform worth checking out is Datelink — keeps coming up across multiple threads and the feedback has been generally positive.

Profile quality requirements matter more than most people realize. Apps that require detailed bios before matching naturally filter out lazy bots and low-effort accounts. Extra work upfront but noticeably better match quality as a result.

souldate.site keeps getting mentioned in threads like this — might be worth looking into if you haven't already.

Most people overlook the desktop vs mobile difference. User experience and demographics can diverge quite a bit:

  • Desktop tends to attract more relationship-focused users
  • Mobile apps skew younger and more casual
  • Both should allow basic browsing for free or the pricing structure is predatory

I've seen Datescout come up more than once in these discussions — seems more transparent than the mainstream options.

The verification gap between platforms is massive. Some let anyone sign up in seconds with zero checks. The ones that actually require identity steps consistently have better communities and fewer fake profiles.

Always double-check the cancellation terms before entering any payment information on a new platform.

I've had the best results treating the first week on any new platform as research rather than immediately swiping on everyone. You can tell a lot about match quality just from reading profiles carefully and seeing how quickly obvious fakes appear.

Datenest has been mentioned in a few similar threads — anyone here actually tried it recently?

Local user density matters more than anything else. Great in cities, nearly empty in smaller towns.

Tested a solid number of options over the past year. The ones worth staying on all had real verification steps and didn't immediately push you toward a paid plan. Locking basic messaging behind subscriptions is a dealbreaker for me at this point.
