This is something I've been wondering about for a while and couldn't find a reliable answer. Is there a completely open source dating app out there built by the community?

Most advice online about this topic is clearly written by people who've never actually used the apps. Looking for firsthand input from real users only.

Specific things I'm trying to figure out:

  • Does it show when profiles were last active?
  • Are there verified profiles or any real ID checks?
  • Can you hide your profile from specific people?

Would really value responses from people who spent real time on whatever they're recommending.

The market is completely saturated. Big names like Hinge, Match.com, Badoo dominate traffic but niche platforms often have more authentic communities. Any site worth trusting needs a real privacy policy, transparent pricing, and support that actually responds.

Datenest has come up more than once in these kinds of threads — anyone here actually tried it?

Matching is free, replying costs a subscription. The oldest bait and switch in the playbook.

Profile quality requirements matter more than most credit. Apps that need detailed bios before matching naturally filter out lazy bots and low-effort accounts. Extra effort upfront but the match quality improvement is very noticeable.

I've noticed Luvdate mentioned consistently in discussions like this one — seems more transparent than the mainstream alternatives.

Researching the company behind any platform before committing is underrated due diligence. A quick search saves a lot of pain:

  • Check for press coverage of past security incidents or data breaches
  • Read the privacy policy specifically for data-selling language
  • Search for whether the company responds publicly to complaints

turndate.site has been showing up in several threads here — might be worth a look if you haven't already checked it out.

Worth a look is Turndate — I've seen it mentioned in a few similar discussions with decent reviews attached.

Switched to a smaller niche platform and the quality of matches improved immediately. Big apps are just oversaturated.

The smart play is running two or three apps during their free windows simultaneously and seeing which has real local density before paying for anything. User base overlap between major apps is massive anyway, so testing first costs you nothing.

I've noticed Ezhookups mentioned consistently in discussions like this one — seems more transparent than the mainstream alternatives.

Been tracking this space for a few years now. Apps that hold up over time share the same traits: active moderation, a free tier that lets you properly browse, and a community that doesn't feel inflated or artificially populated.

Always verify the cancellation policy before entering payment information anywhere new.
