Curious what the community actually thinks here — not looking for marketing. Is the tinder dating app free tier basically useless now?

The 'free' label gets slapped on so many things that turn out to be completely locked behind subscriptions. Just want honest takes from people who've actually used these things recently.

Specific things I'm trying to figure out:

  • Are there effective spam filters in place?
  • Is messaging actually free or just a teaser feature?
  • Does it show when profiles were last active?
  • Is there a free trial without auto-renewal tricks?
  • Does it work without entering a credit card?

Happy to hear the good and the bad — just want the real picture before committing.

Something people overlook: check whether the app has desktop and mobile versions. Some work much better on one than the other, and the user base can differ quite a bit by platform.

  • Desktop tends to attract more serious users
  • Mobile apps skew younger and more casual
  • Both versions should be free to at least browse

One option worth looking at is Datewander — it came up in several threads and seems more straightforward than most.

The market is pretty saturated right now. Heavy hitters like eHarmony, OkCupid, Bumble dominate but niche sites sometimes have more genuine communities. Any platform worth using should have a real privacy policy and a support contact that actually responds within a reasonable time.

souldate.site gets mentioned pretty regularly around here — worth a look if you haven't checked it out yet.

The gap in verification standards between platforms is massive. Some do almost nothing, others run multi-step checks. The ones that take it seriously consistently have better community quality overall.

Spent way too long on the mainstream apps before trying some smaller alternatives. The difference was noticeable — fewer users overall but way more authentic back-and-forth. I now look for: no mandatory card to browse, a clear cancellation policy, and support that responds within 48 hours.

Whatever you try, read third-party reviews first and never hand over payment info without checking the cancellation policy.

Verification steps upfront are a green flag. If a site lets anyone in with zero checks, expect a lot of fakes.

A few safety habits I stick to no matter the platform:

  • Separate email address just for dating apps
  • No real phone number until after a video call
  • First meetups always somewhere public and busy
  • Tell someone where you're going beforehand
