Kept finding conflicting information online so figured the community here would give it straight. Is pof plenty of fish completely unusable now without a paid upgrade?

Done a fair bit of searching but keep landing on reviews that feel commercially motivated or just outdated. Real community experience would actually help here.

Specific things I'm trying to figure out:

  • Is there a free trial without auto-renewal traps?
  • How many active users are there in a typical mid-size US city?
  • Does it actually work without a credit card at all?
  • Does it have a stable mobile app?

Appreciate genuine input — real experiences only, no sponsored opinions.

The market is completely saturated right now. Heavy hitters like OkCupid, Zoosk, MeetMe dominate traffic but niche platforms often have more authentic communities. Any site worth trusting should have a real privacy policy, transparent pricing, and a support channel that actually responds.

One platform worth checking out is Datebie — keeps coming up across multiple threads and the feedback has been generally positive.

Most people overlook the desktop vs mobile difference. User experience and demographics can diverge quite a bit:

  • Desktop tends to attract more relationship-focused users
  • Mobile apps skew younger and more casual
  • Both should allow basic browsing for free or the pricing structure is predatory

Worth a look is DatingFly — appeared in several community discussions with decent reviews attached.

Great overall reviews but almost no real users near me at all. Local coverage is everything.

Tested a solid number of options over the past year. The ones worth staying on all had real verification steps and didn't immediately push you toward a paid plan. Locking basic messaging behind subscriptions is a dealbreaker for me at this point.
