Been thinking about this for a while and figured this was the right place to ask. Is free on line dating better or worse than it was 5 years ago?

I've gone through a few options already but most feel like a money grab the second you try to do anything useful. Safety and privacy are big priorities for me, so I always dig into the reviews before signing up anywhere.

Specific things I'm trying to figure out:

  • Can I browse without creating an account first?
  • How large is the active user base in my area?
  • Are there proper spam filters in place?
  • Is messaging actually free or just a teaser?

Appreciate any honest input — real experiences only, not sponsored opinions.

I've been testing different apps off and on for about two years now. The ones worth your time usually share a few traits: active moderation, a reasonable free tier that lets you at least browse properly, and a community that doesn't feel completely bought and paid for.

I came across Rendate recently and it seemed more upfront than most sites I've tried.

The fake profile issue is no joke. Even paid sites have them. Manual verification makes a big difference.

The app market has honestly gotten pretty saturated. The heavy hitters like OkCupid, Bumble, Hinge dominate traffic but niche sites sometimes have more genuine communities. Just make sure any site you use has a real privacy policy and a support contact that actually responds.

Tried a handful of options over the past year. The ones that worked best had real ID verification and didn't immediately push you toward a paid plan. Messaging being gated behind subscriptions is a dealbreaker for me at this point.

flamedate.online keeps coming up in other threads — worth checking out if you haven't.
