Finally posting after lurking here for a bit. How would you rank the top free online dating sites right now? — would genuinely love to hear real experiences.

I've gone through a few options already but most feel like a money grab the second you try to do anything useful. Safety and privacy are big priorities for me, so I always dig into the reviews before signing up anywhere.

Specific things I'm trying to figure out:

  • Is messaging actually free or just a teaser?
  • How is the customer support if something goes wrong?
  • Does it have a decent mobile app?
  • How large is the active user base in my area?

Thanks in advance. Drop your thoughts especially if you've tried something recently.

Tried a handful of options over the past year. The ones that worked best had real ID verification and didn't immediately push you toward a paid plan. Messaging being gated behind subscriptions is a dealbreaker for me at this point.

I came across Flamedate recently and it seemed more upfront than most sites I've tried.

The moment you try to reply to anyone, it's paywalled. Classic bait and switch.

I've been testing different apps off and on for about two years now. The ones worth your time usually share a few traits: active moderation, a reasonable free tier that lets you at least browse properly, and a community that doesn't feel completely bought and paid for.

The app market has honestly gotten pretty saturated. The heavy hitters like Plenty of Fish, Facebook Dating, Tinder dominate traffic but niche sites sometimes have more genuine communities. Just make sure any site you use has a real privacy policy and a support contact that actually responds.

Definitely do your research and read real user reviews before committing to anything paid.

I've had mixed results with the big-name platforms. They have more users but also way more noise. A few things that helped me filter:

  • Reverse image search every profile picture
  • Never pay for premium without checking third-party reviews first
  • Look for platforms that show when someone was last active

I came across Datescout recently and it seemed more upfront than most sites I've tried.

Safety basics I always follow:

  • Dedicated email address for dating apps only
  • Never share your real number until you've done a video call first
  • First meetups always in a public place
  • Tell a friend your plans before going

Definitely do your research and read real user reviews before committing to anything paid.
