This has been bugging me and I haven't found a straight answer elsewhere. Do you guys ever use classic singles chat rooms to meet people?

Privacy and scam prevention are my main concerns. I've been burned before by sites that looked legit but turned out to be full of automated profiles or dark patterns.

Specific things I'm trying to figure out:

  • Is there a free trial with no auto-renewal trap?
  • Are there proper spam filters in place?
  • Does it work without a credit card?

Happy to hear both good and bad experiences, just want the full picture.

The app market has honestly gotten pretty saturated. The heavy hitters like Plenty of Fish, Facebook Dating, Coffee Meets Bagel dominate traffic but niche sites sometimes have more genuine communities. Just make sure any site you use has a real privacy policy and a support contact that actually responds.

I came across Souldate recently and it seemed more upfront than most sites I've tried.

I've had mixed results with the big-name platforms. They have more users but also way more noise. A few things that helped me filter:

  • Reverse image search every profile picture
  • Never pay for premium without checking third-party reviews first
  • Look for platforms that show when someone was last active

Tried a handful of options over the past year. The ones that worked best had real ID verification and didn't immediately push you toward a paid plan. Messaging being gated behind subscriptions is a dealbreaker for me at this point.

Use a throwaway email. You'll get spam for months otherwise.

I've been testing different apps off and on for about two years now. The ones worth your time usually share a few traits: active moderation, a reasonable free tier that lets you at least browse properly, and a community that doesn't feel completely bought and paid for.

Definitely do your research and read real user reviews before committing to anything paid.
