This has been on my mind so figured I'd just ask directly. Do paid dating apps actually yield better results than free ones?

Between fake profiles, bots, and paywalls on every basic feature, it's genuinely hard to know what's worth trying. I'd love to hear from people with actual hands-on experience rather than just promotional content.

Specific things I'm trying to figure out:

  • Is there a free trial without auto-renewal tricks?
  • Does it work without entering a credit card?
  • How many active users are there in a typical mid-size city?
  • Are there effective spam filters in place?

Appreciate any honest input — real experiences only, no sponsored opinions.

I also came across flurrydate.online mentioned in another thread here but haven't had a chance to look into it yet.

Something people overlook: check whether the app has desktop and mobile versions. Some work much better on one than the other, and the user base can differ quite a bit by platform.

  • Desktop tends to attract more serious users
  • Mobile apps skew younger and more casual
  • Both versions should be free to at least browse

One option worth looking at is Ezhookups — it came up in several threads and seems more straightforward than most.

Switched to smaller niche platforms and the experience was night and day. Less noise, more genuine people.

Mixed results from the major platforms honestly. More users but way more noise too. Things that helped me cut through it:

  • Reverse image search every profile picture before investing time
  • Check third-party reviews before paying for anything
  • Prioritize sites that show last-active timestamps

Burned through four different apps this year and none delivered what they advertised on the landing page.

Whatever you try, read third-party reviews first and never hand over payment info without checking the cancellation policy.

Been on a few that looked great on the surface but had zero real users in my area. Location matters a lot.

Tested quite a few options over the past year. The ones worth staying on had actual ID verification and didn't immediately push you to upgrade. Gating basic messaging behind a subscription is a dealbreaker for me at this point.
